Search Hints

You can search the catalogue for: print books, journal titles, videos, theses etc held in the Library and electronic books, journal titles, databases, exam papers etc to which the University has access.

Title	Enter the first words of the title: far from the madding. Leave out articles like The, A, An, and foreign language equivalents at the beginning of titles: lord of the rings not the lord of the rings. Try alternative spellings or punctuation such as behavior, behaviour, handbook, hand book, pre-war, prewar, & (ampersand), and. To find exam papers, enter a course code such as physics1002 or course name and set the Quick limit Exam papers.
Journal or Newspaper Title	Enter the first words of the journal title: scientific american Do not search for a journal article title in most cases. However, if an article is on your course reading list, try both article title and journal title. Leave out articles like The, A, An, and foreign language equivalents at the beginning of journal titles: advertiser not the advertiser. Try alternative spellings or punctuation such as behavior, behaviour, & (ampersand), and.
Author	Enter last name then the first initial: dickens c. Enter organisation name: american chemical society. Enter dept not department.
Keywords	Truncate with ?: child? finds child, children etc. Combine search terms with Boolean operators and, or, not: fire and vegetation - both terms present fire or burning - either term present (fire or burning) and vegetation - group terms with brackets vegetation not grassland - the second term cannot be present. Search adjacent words or phrases in quotes: "french revolution". Search hyphenated words in quotes and also as a single word:"pre-war" or prewar. Use field codes to search terms in particular parts of the record: nkey dickens and tkey cities to search dickens as author and cities in the title. Or use the Guided Keyword Search.

Subject Heading	Use Library of Congress subject headings: france history.
Series Title for Books	Use for a publisher's book series not a journal. Enter the first words of the series title. Leave out initial articles like The, A, An and foreign language equivalents.
Composer/Author	Useful for prolific composers or authors. Enter the composer's or author's name: mozart w.
Call Number	Use to browse a range of known call numbers. Enter part or whole of a call number: 559.4.
Limiting searches by date, language etc (optional).	Do not limit searches routinely. Use Quick Limit or More limits to limit searches by date, language, location etc. Only Title, Journal Title, Keywords and Call Number searches can be limited in this way. Or use Post Limit at the results display screen. All searches can be limited in this way.
If your search fails	Check your spelling. Check that you have interpreted your citation correctly. Make sure you're entering search terms correctly. Click Help on the top toolbar if necessary. Try a different search option. For subject searches, try alternative search terms. We may not have the item. Consider getting it from another library through the Document delivery service.
