Welcome to the Centre for Automotive Safety Research

The Centre conducts high quality independent research that enables rational decision making, leading to reductions in the human and economic losses from road crashes.

The Centre is focused on:

  • Conducting multidisciplinary research to understand how road crashes and the resulting injuries are caused;
  • Proposing and evaluating ways to prevent crashes and injuries; and
  • Providing independent professional advice on road safety matters to government and non-government organisations in Australia and overseas.

 New Director of CASR appointed

The University of Adelaide has appointed a new director to lead CASR.

Professor Mary Lydon, an expert in road safety, traffic management and road design, has more than 30 years experience in the field and is expected to build on CASR's outstanding world wide reputation as a leader in automotive safety research.

Her appointment follows the retirement of CASR's founding director, Professor Jack McLean.

Professor Lydon has taken up her new role as of 31 March 2008.

 Making cars safer for pedestrians

Since 2000, CASR has been conducting the pedestrian sub-system tests for the Australasian New Car Assessment Program. This program rates the pedestrian friendliness of the front of vehicles.

The Centre for Automotive Safety Research receives core funding from both the South Australian Motor Accident Commission and the South Australian Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure.
